Hiring: Freelance Editor, acquisitions

Must have experience working as an editor for business or startup content

Want to join us?

The Role

We’re looking for a freelance editor to join us as at They Got Acquired.

You’ll edit reported pieces, guide our roster of freelance writers, manage an editorial calendar, and build processes that facilitate content creation and publishing.

The ideal candidate has years of experience editing pieces on startups and business, and is familiar with the M&A process. We consider this role as adding expertise to our team, so your knowledge of the subject matter is important to us.

Our mission is to change the definition of startup success by covering 6-, 7-, and 8-figure acquisitions in the online space. These deals don’t tend to get headlines because they don’t return huge multiples to investors, yet they can be life-changing for founders and offer valuable insights for the entrepreneurial community.

What we look for

About You

Our ideal candidate…

  • Has at least 5 years (and possibly much more) of experience as an editor for journalistic publications
  • Has experience editing reported pieces about startups and businesses, and is comfortable with the M&A process
  • Has experience managing a roster of freelance writers and an editorial calendar
  • Enjoys building processes for content creation and won’t feel lost if those processes don’t exist already
  • Is comfortable being part of a small, scrappy team that’s building a business from scratch
  • Follows a journalistic code of ethics that you’ve learned by working in the industry
  • Cares deeply about accuracy
  • Is a problem-solver who suggests solutions when identifying problems
  • Is excited by the flurry of deals happening in the online space and the rise of the creator economy
  • Sees value in covering a company that bootstrapped to a $2 million sale rather than focusing solely on those who raise VC and sell for $200M

Your Responsibilities

  • Edit reported pieces by our team of freelance reporters
  • Most of our pieces fall into one of two buckets: stories of companies that sold and the founders who built them, and advice posts that help founders who want to exit (for example, how to ensure due diligence goes smoothly, how to figure out when the best time is to sell your startup, how to decide which marketplace is best for your sale)
  • Both developmental and copyediting are important. Some of our writers need only light editing, others need a heavy rewrite. You should be comfortable with both.
  • Guide and mentor our team of freelance writers on how to tell a great story, how to navigate tough situations with sources, etc.
  • Assign posts to reporters based on their skill set
  • Ensure accuracy by checking facts and relying on your expertise in this industry to identify red flags
  • Manage an editorial calendar, ensuring we have enough content in the pipeline to meet our quantity goals
  • Build processes and suggest improvements that facilitate ease of content creation and publishing
  • While our biggest need is support for stories that publish on our website, you might also be asked to review newsletters and Twitter threads
  • Eventually, oversee our editorial budget and keep us on track with our spending

Commitment and Compensation

This is a remote position on a freelance basis. Work whenever you want and wherever you want, so long as you do the job well.

We’re looking for 15-20 hours/month to start, with an option to add more hours as the company grows.

The role pays $60-75/hour, depending on experience, and we’re happy to work on an hourly basis or a monthly retainer.

(If you have 15+ years of experience in this exact field and command a higher rate, please apply anyhow and let us know that in your application.)

We offer a check-in at the three-month mark to reflect on whether the partnership is a fit for both of us.
